Considering I was disgusted with the Red Wings' play by the midway point of the first period, it's hard to complain about an outcome that saw them pick up a point.

That said, after their third-period rally to take the lead, it really feels like they should have done better.

As important as the Red Wings' win in Calgary tonight was, as road wins have been tough to come by this season, it really wasn't that great of a game.

I mentioned that the play in the second period was "scrambly" and that I thought the Flames would score if it kept up.

Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk and goalie Jimmy Howard were selected by All-Star team captain Zdeno Chara at the NHL All-Star Player Fantasy Draft on Thursday.

Datsyuk was the first overall selection of the draft. Howard was the last goalie selected, going in the tenth round (the round by which all goalies were required to be selected).

I'm not going to waste the rest of my night watching the Red Wings put in zero effort in Montreal so I'm writing my postgame thoughts up in the middle of the second period.

It's not the lack of Nicklas Lidstrom that has Detroit looking this bad. Missing Lidstrom doesn't cause Jimmy Howard to screw up on the third and fourth goals against.

Quick postgame notes 'cause I'm sick and need to try to get to sleep.

Chris Stewart challenging Brad Stuart at the end of the first period was just a stupid move by the St. Louis forward. Your team has the lead and you put them on the PK? Wings took advantage and that was the turning point of the game.

Short and sweet: It should not have taken the shootout for the Red Wings to beat the Blue Jackets tonight. Detroit is the best team in the league (or among them, depending on the time of day) and Columbus is the worst. Needing the gimmick to get the win is disappointing.

I managed to harp on the negatives even after a big OT win for Detroit over the Blackhawks on Saturday, so let's start there for tonight's win over the Sabres.

The Wings definitely let up after Ryan Miller got pulled from the Buffalo net. They did that after the first period against Chicago and it nearly bit them in the ass.

I had joked before the game that Todd Bertuzzi was in the lineup for the Red Wings today because his skills would be needed for the inevitable shootout against Chicago. I was close, as it was Bertuzzi scoring with 39 seconds left in overtime to keep the Wings from a shootout with a 3-2 win.
