        <![CDATA[<p>Rookie goaltender Cam Ward led his Carolina Hurricanes as they held off a third-period comeback by the Edmonton Oilers to claim the franchise's first Stanley Cup Championship Monday night.</p>

<p>Ward made nine saves on ten shots in the final period, including several key stops in the game's closing minutes.  He was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the playoffs after the game.</p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>The Calgary Flames will return to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since they won the Cup in 1989, having defeated the San Jose Sharks, four games to two, in the Western Conference Finals.</p>

<p>The Flames held a 3-2 series lead heading into Wednesday's Game Six in Calgary.  The road team had won each of the first five games of the series but the Flames were able to finish off the Sharks at home with a 3-1 victory.</p>]]>

<p>Nicklas Lidstrom's assist on a goal by Phoenix's Shane Doan midway through the second period was the only point tallied by a Red Wing in the game as Pavel Datsyuk was held scoreless.</p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim didn't have a storybook ending left in them after forcing a Game Seven in the Stanley Cup Finals.  The Ducks were shutout by Martin Brodeur as the New Jersey Devils claimed their third Stanley Cup in nine years.</p>

<p>The Devils tight defensive game and stellar netminding by Brodeur left Anaheim struggling to create offense but unable to put the puck in the net.  Brodeur ended the series with his third shutout of the Finals and an NHL record seven playoff shutouts.</p>]]>
